Danger danger

There is a beach in Evanston, which you have to pay to use, the entrance to which has a sign which states:

"Lake Michigan is a Dangerous Body of water."

It goes on to say:

"Swimming in Lake Michigan is dangerous and may result in death or severe injury."

Hardly a friendly advertising policy, is it?

Lightning

My office has a tremendous view out over Lake Michigan. Both today and yesterday, huge thunderstorms have rolled over Chicago, and I've been audience to spectacular shows of fork lightning coming out of the sky down into the lake. This would never happen back home. You just get soggy, right?

Two questions

Fundamental questions that arose whilst sitting on the beach on July 4th:

1. Why does the dog want the ball?

2. Why do people like watching fireworks so much?

Sailing away

A department computer network failure is a good reason to take the afternoon off, right? Well, if not, the sunny skies and near perfect wind conditions are definitely a good reason to go sailing. Boat, lake, sun, wind and wonderful view of Chicago - what more could you want? The laser is of course only a boat by name, in so far as much as it doesn't really provide any sort of a barrier between you and the water...
