Goodbye number one

As I enter my last week in Evanston, the time for farewells has begun. Tonight I said goodbye to my Taekwondo class, which has been a great way to spend two years of Thursday evenings. Thank-you to everyone there, especially Master Connelly. It wouldn't have been the same without you.

Yes, this is sentimental bullshit, but I'm in a sentimental-bullshit-type mood, so you'll have to live with it.

Bye Claire!

Thanks again for all the help re: my Qwando education. Ah, just to think - a year and a third ago I was a stumbling, awkward, self-conscious, bumbling white belt newbie. And now . . . now I am a stumbling, awkward, self-conscious, bumbling green belt. (hey, did I mention that I knife-handed a board into splinters? Yes, yes, I believe that I did . . )

Anyway, have a great fruitful time in Houston. We'll all miss you in class. Meanwhile, I will assume the role of America America's Evanston YMCA Qwando Correspondent, providing you with updates, snide gossip, and useless trivia from the gym floor.

And by the way, re: your previous comment about why-live-in-Chicago-when-it-snows-a-lot-and-is-so-flat: well, thank god, I say that it IS flat, otherwise we'd all be walking like penguins.

Hey Claire,

I hope you have a good last week, say your fond farewells, it's good to be sentimental at times like these. So the British occupation of Evanston is winding down, but I'll see you in Texas!

love
Steve

QWANDO UPDATE 12/14/07

Bulletin from Evanston, IL - in a tasteful and reverent ceremony reminiscent of the final scene of the first Stars Wars movie, the scene in which Hans Solo, Princess Laia, Chewbaca, and Luke Skywalker - and c'mon, we're supposed to believe that "Skywalker" is his birth name and not some slick moniker he gave himself to make himself sound cool?? - are given medallions for meritorious service or something, I was awarded my green belt.

Yes, a green belt. Why, it was just a year and a quarter ago when a starry eyed kid from the sticks wandered into the Evanston Y gym, thinking that maybe, just maybe . . . .

Oh yeah, Sarah got awarded a green belt, too. May as well share the glory.

When I got home, I celebrated the occasion by downing a Margarita and watching a rerun of "Scrubs".
