I like blue, too.
I think the American one could be more easily turned into a cute, animated character. It has those little legs and the two shiny dots could become eyes.
In comparison, the British pillarbox would have to be some kind of limbless monster with a big, gaping mouth. It would probably dribble a lot and scare small children.
