Postage

Suppose you want to send someone a birthday card. Suppose your card weighs in at around one ounce. Depending on from where and to where you are posting said card, the cost will vary. This much is clear. The following is not:

US -> US 39 cents (approx 20p)
US -> UK 84 cents (approx 43p)
UK -> UK 32p
UK -> US 1.12GPB

I don't understand. How can it cost less to send a card from the US to the UK than the combined cost of sending a card domestically inside each country? And why on earth does it cost so much to send something from the UK to the US? The work load is the same whether the card travels in each direction... where is the extra money going?

You seem to have a very naïve business model for postal services. Not that I'd know anything about the cost of sending anyone a birthday card, of course.

Would you rather have some sort of supply and demand model? More people send letters from the US to the UK so it's cheaper?
